The weather around Boston is perfect today, especially to walk down the street and vote. This was my first time voting in Massachusetts. My polling station in New Jersey was in the local ambulance squad building. The men and women who volunteer there have known me since I was a baby. I never had to wait in line. I was a little upset that my voting experience would not be the same here in Brookline.
There was a line down the block earlier this morning, so I opted to wait in line later in the day. I excitedly walked down the road prepared with my paper and ipod, but when I got to my polling place there wasn't a line. I walked right in - not one person in front of me. The man behind the table greeted me warmly, asked for my name and then commented on Dr. Zhivago - the book my mom got my name from - and then I went on to vote.
So, it ended up being quite similar to the small town voting of my past.
I walked out of the building and tears came to my eyes. I didn't expect to be so emotional, but I suppose this really is a historic day. I'm excited to see the results - and hopefully enjoy a glass of champagne.
Happy Election Day!
November 6th update:
The first presidential election I voted in I was at college. I went to sleep with the tv on and with the knowledge that Gore was our president. A few hours later I awoke to turn the tv off and was surprised to learn much had changed.
Four years ago I was in NJ and had two friends over, but this year I wanted a little bit more. So, we had 6 friends over, which is all our little room can fit really. I made apple pie (very american of us) and we huddled together and watched history unfold before us.
