One week ago, about right now, Peter and I were looking out at a Caribbean sunset - taking in our last evening of our honeymoon. Already, normal life has begun to creep in on us. A week ago feels much further away than I'd like it to feel. But...we're home. And I do love being here - with the crisp air, apple cider tea (which I had this afternoon), and (finally) a weekend to ourselves with nothing to plan - and nothing to shoot. Just us - taking in time.
Yesterday I wandered into the Brookline Booksmith looking for a copy of a magazine (more on that to come!) - when I saw the new Bill Bryson book At Home, out in paperback. I decided to pick up a copy. Tucked inside was a little note saying that this author would be visiting the store soon - and to inquire about tickets. I did...and now Peter, Graham and I are going to hear him speak next Thursday. I am thrilled!
My mom and I would choose a book every now and then to read aloud before going to bed. One of the first books was The Lost Continent by the very same author. Quieting down before going to sleep was often difficult because we would find ourselves laughing hysterically - tears streaming down our faces. After she turned out the light and left my room, I'd lay in bed remembering the funny parts and would begin laughing all over again. After a few outbursts I'd hear, "Lara...that's enough." But really - he's quite witty. If you don't already know him - you should definitely pick up one of his books. I suggest, for first time readers of Bryson, A Walk in the Woods.
In recent years, I've also been kept awake (and possible have kept Peter awake with my laughing as well) with thoughts of an excerpt from Bryson's book, I'm a Stranger Here Myself. The author is originally from the USA, but travelled to Europe in his early 20s, married a British woman, and has pretty much lived there since. A few years ago he returned to America to live for a while and wrote the book I just mentioned. Peter and I have this book on CD. The following bit still makes me laugh with tears. And...I love his voice. Enjoy!
Yay to being At Home!
ps...I use the phrase "bread product" on an almost daily basis. Listening tonight, I realized I must have gotten it from him.
