Happy New Year! I still have plenty of weddings and shoots to show you from 2015, so off we go!
Karla & Todd were married in Karla’s hometown of Portland, ME this summer. They were wed in a beautiful old church founded in 1730 – First Parish Congregational Church in Yarmouth, and then everyone was off to celebrate at Ocean Gateway. I had never been there before, and it turned out to be a really fun place to shoot. The windows overlook the water and the sky did not disappoint that day either.
This was such a fun day to be a part of. Here are some highlights!

Melissa & Lucas were married on Peaks Island this Summer. The weather isn't too bad in Boston, as I sit here in early December, so I won't wish to be back there quite yet. Give me a few more weeks until that happens. It was pretty much a perfect day though. They and their guests stayed in Portland and took the ferry over for the day. I enjoy the anticipation of the ferry ride – both as a passenger on the way over and as an onlooker as you see it approaching the island. It’s a great way to begin a day, especially a day like a wedding.
When we met up with Melissa & Lucas last year to take some pre-wedding photos and discussed their wedding, they said they wanted their wedding to be more about their guests and the two of them – the celebration itself. I think they 100% accomplished that. Their ceremony was lovely and every thing about it connected with who they are - both separate and together. And afterwards there was a party!
This wedding had some of the best dancing we’ve seen, and on top of that, one of the best music selections we’ve heard too. That is to say, a little off “wedding” book. The DJ was super nice and gave into the guests’ requests and played songs against his better judgement, but the guests knew the crowd and the songs worked. People flocked to the dance floor for “California” by Joni Mitchell. Really. I got to sing along while photographing – it was the best.
And lastly, a special shout out to Sushi, the island cat who visited during portraits on the rocks.

Just a few days after getting married Sage & Nathan flew out west and began hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. They only recently came by to see their wedding photos for the first time, which means I now get to share them with all of you. Their wedding was the first we photographed this year, and what a way to begin. It was everything we look for in a wedding – a beautiful location with details that fit the couple and their style; a fun group of family & friends; and most importantly a couple who is aware of what the day is really about, and who aren’t afraid to truly experience their emotions with a camera around.
Sage & Nathan went through their day with understanding and intention, which seems to me, from the few times I’ve had the pleasure of hanging out with them, is the same way they go through their daily lives. The ceremony was beautiful and emotional and the same can be said for each of the toasts given. Peter & I left feeling full of the joy that surrounded us that day. We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect way to begin our 2015 season.
A few random things about Sage & Nathan’s day:
• The celebration happened at Smolak Farms, a place Nathan (and his best man) visited often growing up
• Sage wore boots under her dress – the best shoes for a farm wedding
• Sage hand dyed each of the girls dresses
• Nathan’s sister made the wedding cake, which was delicious!
• Sage knitted the cake toppers – each of their favorite vegetables
• They had pizza for dinner, catered by Posto Mobile
• Guinea Hens roam the farm, which is just fantastic
• They made jam as favors and the hot pepper oil for each of the tables
• The chuppah was made by Sage’s mom with her Grandfather’s tallis
• Lilacs! in the bouquets – beautifully arranged by The Flower Mill

One year ago Matt got in touch with me about photographing his wedding. In his email he asked if I remembered him, which of course I did. He grew up in the town next to the one Peter and I grew up in, and was a part of the group we hung out with in our early twenties. There were many late nights in diners, but the night I remember most is memorialized on video. Matt was in a ska band (with some other friends of ours, one of them being Matt’s best man actually) called the Blithering Idiots. Not the whole band, but some of them played us into New Years’ 2001. I looked at that video recently. We look so little and cute, and had no idea what was ahead in all of our lives.
Peter & I probably didn’t know we would get married, but Matt definitely didn’t know he would marry Abby – mostly because he hadn’t met her yet. That came several years later after Matt moved up to Massachusetts to be a member of another band. It was at a concert that Matt was performing at when Abby & Matt first met. That initial meeting led to a connection they couldn’t deny, which brings us to this summer when they had a beautiful tear filled ceremony followed by the best dance party we’ve seen this year. They had The Runaround Sound play their wedding and we highly recommend them if you want a high energy dance party. So much fun!
